With successful completion of this course and the competency examinations (written and skills examinations), you are eligible for placement on the State of Nebraska Nurse Aide Registry. Successful completion also fulfills the nursing assistant requirement for Bryan College of Health Sciences nursing and health professions programs.

Attendance

The first session of class is mandatory. If a student does not attend the first day of class, they are automatically withdrawn from the course. Attendance at all classroom and clinical activities is expected and absences must be made up. Excessive absences may result in dismissal from the course.

Cost

  • Tuition for the course is $500, which includes student manual and student workbook.
  • Full tuition is due at the time of registration.
  • Refund Policy - Cancelation up to two weeks prior to the first day of class will be refunded $450. If cancelation occurs within two weeks of the first day of class, no refund will be given.

Course Description

The Nurse Aide (CNA) Course trains non-licensed individuals to provide safe, effective and caring services to patients, residents and clients in a variety of health care settings. Class participants learn basic nursing skills such as:

  • Bathing
  • Feeding
  • Toileting
  • Walking and moving a patient

The course is taught by Bryan College of Health Sciences faculty and approved by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services Regulation and Licensure.

Course Options

The course provides a minimum of 75 theory and clinical hours. This meets the state and federal requirements for nursing assistant training courses. The course is taken as a non-credit course.

Students taking this course will receive a certificate of completion.

Hastings location students: Central Community College in Hastings is our preferred partner for obtaining the CNA certification. Please see Dr. Kappler for registration information.

Requirements

Clinical

Participants are required to dress in a uniform and have a watch with a second hand for clinical days.

Background Checks

As a part of the registration process for the Nursing Aide Course, completion of the following documents is required:

  • Authorization and Disclosure Form for Criminal Background Check
  • Nebraska Health and Human Services Abuse Registry Form

If the background check indicates criminal/abuse behavior, the student may be dismissed from the course. Students may have the opportunity to present information to dispute the background check. For questions or concerns, refer to the Criminal Background Check Policy in the Student Handbook or contact the Dean of Students at 402-481-3804.

Course Prerequisites

Immunization requirements must be provided upon registration. Failure to submit documentation at registration will result in not being registered. Acceptable documentation includes photocopies of medical records, immunization record or documentation form signed by a healthcare provider.

  • Completion of Bryan's tuberculosis (TB) screening questionnaire
    • Information will be reviewed and may require additional follow up by the Student Health Nurses. Questions can be directed to the health nurses at studenthealth@bryanhealth.org
  • Seasonal Influenza vaccination per Bryan Health’s policy
  • COVID 19 vaccination per Bryan Health's policy

Students must be able to provide safe patient care and meet the basic requirements and abilities as outlined by Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

To qualify for placement on the Nebraska Nurse Aide Registry an individual must:

  1. Be at least 16 years of age
  2. Be able to speak and understand the English language
  3. Successfully complete, within 120 days of employment, a state-approved 75 hour nurse aide training and competency evaluation program or 21 hour basic resident care course for intermediate care facilities for the developmentally disabled
  4. Cannot have been convicted of a crime rationally related to the role of a nurse aide involving moral turpitude. (Moral turpitude has been defined as an act or behavior that violates accepted moral standards and in legal terms means anything done contrary to justice, honesty, modesty, good morals and with the intent to defraud.)
